LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles FC overcame a two-goal deficit to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against the LA Galaxy on Sunday night at BMO Stadium, clinching a place in the 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs in front of 22,323 spectators. Joseph Paintsil scored twice to put the visiting Galaxy in command, but second-half goals from Denis Bouanga and Leo Walta completed LAFC's comeback as the two Southern California rivals shared the points in another thrilling edition of El Tráfico.
LAFC entered the match looking to strengthen its position in the Western Conference, while the Galaxy sought a crucial victory to improve their postseason chances. The home side established an early attacking rhythm, controlling possession and creating opportunities through Bouanga and Son Heung-Min. Son appeared to have opened the scoring midway through the first half when he converted a rebound following Bouanga's effort, but the goal was overturned after a lengthy video review determined that Bouanga had been offside during the buildup.
The Galaxy capitalized on the missed opportunity in the 34th minute when Robert Taylor intercepted a pass and delivered the ball to Paintsil, who finished from close range to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. Despite LAFC's continued pressure, the Galaxy maintained their lead heading into halftime and doubled their advantage shortly after the restart. In the 51st minute, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris failed to secure a rebound following a Galaxy attacking opportunity, allowing Paintsil to react quickly and score his second goal of the evening.
The two-goal advantage appeared to put the Galaxy in control, but LAFC responded almost immediately as Bouanga found the back of the net just two minutes later. Armindo Sieb initiated the attacking sequence with a powerful effort that forced goalkeeper JT Marcinkowski into a save, but Bouanga collected the rebound and converted in the 53rd minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and shifting the momentum toward the home side.
LAFC continued to apply pressure, pushing the Galaxy deeper into their defensive half and creating additional scoring opportunities as the visitors struggled to regain control. The equalizer arrived in the 62nd minute when a defensive mistake involving Emiro Garcés allowed Walta to capitalize inside the penalty area, sending the ball past Marcinkowski to level the contest at 2-2. The goal marked Walta's second in four appearances for LAFC and completed a remarkable nine-minute turnaround after the Galaxy had established a two-goal lead.
With the match tied, LAFC maintained its attacking intensity and searched for a decisive third goal, while the Galaxy attempted to withstand the pressure and capitalize on counterattacking opportunities. The home side finished the encounter with 56.4% possession, 21 shots, five attempts on target and 12 corner kicks, compared with the Galaxy's 11 shots, five attempts on target and just one corner. LAFC also registered 583 passes with an 89.7% completion rate, demonstrating its control of possession throughout much of the match. The statistical advantage extended to expected goals, with LAFC generating 3.1 compared with the Galaxy's 1.8, reflecting the home side's consistent attacking threat.
Despite dominating several statistical categories, LAFC struggled to find a winning goal as the Galaxy defense remained resilient during the closing stages. The final moments produced the most dramatic sequence of the evening when Marcinkowski and defender Justin Haak made crucial interventions to deny LAFC from close range. Moments later, substitute Tyler Boyd attempted an acrobatic bicycle kick that Bouanga redirected into the net, appearing to complete a remarkable comeback deep into second-half stoppage time. However, the celebrations were short-lived as the goal was ruled out for offside, leaving the score tied at 2-2.
The result extended LAFC's unbeaten run under interim head coach Xavi Tamarit, who had guided the club to one victory and three draws since taking charge on October 1. More importantly, the comeback secured LAFC's eighth postseason appearance in nine MLS seasons, reinforcing the club's consistency as a Western Conference contender. For the Galaxy, the draw represented a missed opportunity to claim three valuable points after building a commanding advantage away from home. The visitors entered the match without Marco Reus, who was unavailable because of illness, and Hirving Lozano, who remained sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Despite Paintsil's impressive two-goal performance, the Galaxy were unable to preserve their lead and remained ninth in the Western Conference, leaving their playoff aspirations under pressure. Sunday's result also maintained the competitive balance of the Los Angeles rivalry, with both clubs having recorded 10 victories and eight draws against each other.
Although neither side emerged victorious, the encounter demonstrated the intensity and unpredictability that have defined El Tráfico. LAFC displayed the resilience necessary to recover from a two-goal deficit, while the Galaxy were left to reflect on a significant opportunity that slipped away. With the MLS regular season approaching its conclusion, LAFC will look to carry its momentum into the postseason, while the Galaxy must find a way to convert promising performances into victories as the battle for the remaining playoff positions continues.
