SAN DIEGO — San Diego Wave FC started their 2026 NWSL season with a 1–0 loss at home to the Houston Dash at Snapdragon Stadium. They played well but couldn't score. The Dash got their goal in the first half and then defended well to secure all three points.

The Wave controlled the game from the start. They had 70% possession and took 18 shots, nine of which were on target. The Dash only took five shots, with two on target. San Diego also created chances from set pieces, earning 14 corner kicks compared to the Dash’s two. Dash goalkeeper Jane Campbell and their defense kept the Wave from scoring.

Wave players, like Dudinha, tried hard but couldn’t get past Campbell and the Dash defense. This result means San Diego is 0-1-0 to start the season, while the Dash are 1-0-0.

The game was also special because San Diego’s Mimi Van Zanten and her sister Kiki Van Zanten of the Dash played against each other. They are the first sisters to face each other in the NWSL since 2019.

Even though San Diego lost, they played well. They had a lot of the ball, took many shots, and earned numerous corner kicks. This gives them hope that they just need to finish their chances to win games. The Wave will try to do that in their next fixture.

The game showed that San Diego Wave FC has potential. They just need to work on scoring goals. The Dash were happy with their win, while San Diego will look to come back stronger. Wave fans remain optimistic about the team’s chances.
