ANGEL CITY FC 0-0 GOTHAM FC

LOS ANGELES — Angel City FC and Gotham FC played to a 0–0 draw on August 23 at BMO Stadium in a game that was pretty much decided by both teams’ defenses and goalkeepers.
Angel City came out strong in the first half and created some of the better chances early. Gisele Thompson forced Gotham goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger into a diving save in the seventh minute, while Ally Sentnor also came close with an attempt that went just over the crossbar. Angel City finished the first half with eight shots compared to Gotham’s four.
Gotham came out with more pressure after halftime. Sam Kerr had a couple of good chances, but Angel City’s defense did a good job of staying in front of her. Sarah Gorden made an important challenge to stop Kerr from getting a shot off, while goalkeeper Angelina Anderson continued to keep Angel City in the game. The biggest moment came late in the match.
In the 86th minute, Gotham was awarded a penalty after a handball inside the box. Guro Reiten stepped up with a chance to give Gotham the lead, but Anderson guessed correctly and made a huge save to her right. The save kept the game tied and ended up being the difference between Angel City leaving with a point or nothing.
Gotham almost found the winner shortly after. In the 90th minute, Kerr hit a shot from outside the box that beat Anderson but crashed off the crossbar. Angel City held on through the final minutes to finish with a point.
The numbers showed how close the game was. Angel City actually finished with more shots, 16–12, although Gotham had more shots on target, 4–3. Gotham also had a slight advantage in expected goals, 1.21 to 1.03.
For Angel City, Anderson was easily one of the biggest reasons they left with the draw. Her penalty save, along with several other saves throughout the second half, kept Gotham from finding the goal. Sarah Gorden and the rest of the defense also had a strong night dealing with Gotham’s attack.
For Gotham, the result extended their unbeaten streak to nine games, but they will probably feel like they left two points behind after missing the penalty and hitting the crossbar late.
