LOS ANGELES Angel City FC returned from the international break with a narrow 2–1 defeat to Portland Thorns FC on Sunday afternoon, conceding twice late before a stoppage-time response proved insufficient.

Despite controlling much of the match, Angel City was undone by two decisive moments in the final stages. Portland capitalized on a set-piece situation in the 76th minute, as Pietra Tordin headed home from close range following a corner to open the scoring. The visitors doubled their advantage in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Sophia Wilson finished a counterattack that originated from an Angel City free-kick opportunity.

Angel City responded almost immediately. Forward Prisca Chilufya converted a one-time volley at the back post in the 98th minute, finishing a cross from defender Emily Sams to cut the deficit to one. However, Portland managed the remaining seconds effectively to secure all three points.

Statistically, Angel City held the advantage across several key categories. The hosts recorded 55.3% possession and outshot Portland 19–10, including an 8–7 edge in shots on target. Much of that pressure came in sustained spells of attacking buildup, but inefficiency in the final third limited their ability to convert control into goals.

Angel City showed early promise in the first half, generating multiple scoring opportunities. Defender Gisele Thompson forced a save with an effort from distance, while midfielder Maiara Niehues tested the Portland defense from the penalty area. Rookie Taylor Suarez, making her first professional start, was active in advanced positions and registered a shot on target before being substituted in the second half.

A key positive for Angel City was the return of Jun Endo, who made her first appearance of the season in the 63rd minute following injury. Though on limited minutes, her presence added fluidity in possession and offered a glimpse of her impact moving forward.

Head Coach Alex Straus pointed to critical errors as the difference in the result. “We need to come out of these games winning,” Straus said. “But the mistakes were too big, and we need to minimize those areas.”

Chilufya echoed that sentiment post-match, noting the team’s overall performance while emphasizing the need for execution. “Coming in the second half, we were the better team,” she said. “It’s just about doing the fundamental things and sticking to the plan.”

While Angel City demonstrated control in possession and attacking intent, lapses in key defensive moments proved costly. The defeat highlights ongoing challenges in managing set pieces and transition phases, areas that directly influenced both Portland goals.

Angel City will look to respond next weekend as they continue their homestand, aiming to translate strong underlying performances into results.
