CHICAGO —Chicago Fire FC pulled off an impressive 2-1 win over New York City FC on Saturday at Soldier Field, giving the home crowd plenty to cheer about. New York struck first in the 19th minute through Hannes Wolf, and things got even tougher for Chicago when midfielder Dje D’Avilla was sent off just before halftime, leaving the Fire to play the rest of the match a man down.
Shorthanded for the entire second half, Chicago needed to work harder defensively while still finding ways to create scoring chances. Despite the disadvantage, the Fire fought back. Anton Salétros headed home the equalizer in the 55th minute off an assist from Maren Haile-Selassie, who later himself found the winner in the 87th minute after capitalizing on a defensive mistake made by New York.
With the crowd on its feet, the Fire held on through the final minutes to secure a huge 2-1 victory. The Men in Red held onto the win in front of 31,893 fans, capping off a gritty performance at Soldier Field.
