CHICAGO — The Chicago Fire lost 3-1 to the Philadelphia Union at Soldier Field on Wednesday night, Oct. 14. Chicago opened the scoring in the 45th minute when Maren Haile-Selassie scored his 11th goal of the season, which was set up by Noah Allen and Jonathan Bamba.
The lead didn’t last, because former Union defender Jack Elliott was sent off late in the first half on a second yellow card, which shifted the momentum of the match. Milan Iloski equalized in the 49th minute with his 18th league goal of the season, and Bruno Damiani put the Union ahead in the 55th minute, so Chicago’s early lead was gone within the first ten minutes of the second half.
Damiani added his second goal of the night in the 67th minute to make it 3-1, and Chicago couldn’t find a way back despite five substitutions. All three Philadelphia goals came with a man advantage. The Union also had the edge in the numbers, with 52% possession, 11 shots to Chicago’s 6, and a 7-2 advantage in corners.
