NASHVILLE — The Premier League kicked off summer pre-season friendlies with a US tour stopping in cities like Nashville, New York, and Chicago. Tennessee’s GEODIS park hosted the first match with a near 25,000 fans on Saturday July 25, showcasing Liverpool FC vs Sunderland AFC. In his first game in charge, Andoni Iraola’s Reds took the victory 4-2 over the Black Cats.
Liverpool’s starting eleven featured a mix of young and experienced players with Joe Gomez sporting the captain’s band. Gomez lasted a mere 10 minutes of play before exiting the pitch with injury, replaced by Ifeanyi Ndukwe and Kostas Tsimikas taking over as captain.
Kieran Morrison found the net early in the first while Sunderland’s Enzo Le Fee responded soon after in the 28th minute. Teams headed to the locker room tied at the half.
Although the Red’s kept control overall in the second, Sunderland’s Tymur Tutierov gave the Cats a lead in the 49th minute. Liverpool quickly responded when Dominik Szoboszlai caught a ball outside of the box leveling the score in the 56th. Federico Chiesa and Lewis Koumas went on to burry the lead in the 72nd and 85th minute of play in Nashville.
Liverpool return to their US base camp of Chicago, Illinois before heading to Yankee Stadium in Bronx, New York to face Wrexham AFC on Wednesday July 29. Ryan Gravenberch, Alexander Isak, and Florian Wirtz met the team back in Chicago to join the roster after their World Cup break. Alexis Mac Allister, Víctor Muñoz, Alisson Becker, Virgil van Dijk, and Cody Gakpo will sit out the entirety of the tour to recover.
Sunderland will travel to Harrison, NJ for their second leg of the tour to face Leeds United at Sports Illustrated Stadium on July 30.
