CHICAGO — Mexico set the tone early but let control slip, settling for a 1–1 draw with a composed Belgium side.

Mexico started sharper and imposed themselves from the start. Their pressure paid off in the 19th minute when Jorge Sánchez found the breakthrough, finishing off a sequence that came from sustained attacking play. The early goal matched Mexico’s intensity, as they looked more aggressive and direct in the opening stretch.

Belgium, though, remained composed. They didn’t rush the game and instead leaned on their structure to slow things down. By halftime, Mexico still held the lead, but Belgium had already begun to grow into the match.

The second half shifted immediately.

Just one minute after the restart, Dodi Lukebakio scored in the 46th minute to make it 1–1, capitalizing on the shift in momentum and immediately putting Mexico under pressure. From that point on, the game opened up.

Belgium controlled slightly more of the ball, finishing with 52.5% possession, and looked more comfortable building through the midfield. Mexico responded by staying aggressive in transition, creating the better overall chances despite having less of the ball.

Mexico finished with 10 shots compared to Belgium’s 5 and also led in shots on target (3–2), showing their ability to generate danger even without dominating possession. Belgium, on the other hand, relied on efficiency and organization, keeping their shape and limiting clear looks late in the match.

As the game progressed, the physical side increased. Challenges came in harder, and both teams had moments of frustration. Belgium picked up three yellow cards, while Mexico had two, reflecting the competitive edge in what was officially a friendly.

In the final minutes, both teams pushed for a winner. Mexico looked to break quickly and catch Belgium out of shape, while Belgium continued to probe through possession. Neither side was able to create a decisive moment, with defenses holding firm and goalkeepers making the necessary saves.

At the final whistle, the match ended level at 1–1.

It was a balanced performance overall. Mexico showed energy, attacking intent, and the ability to create chances. Belgium responded with control, discipline, and composure, especially after conceding early.

Key Stats:

Belgium edged possession (52.5%–47.5%), but Mexico created more chances, leading in shots (10–5) and shots on target (3–2). Corners were even (3–2 Mexico), while Belgium picked up more bookings (3–2).
