SAN DIEGO —San Diego State picked up an important 1-0 win over Gonzaga on Saturday night to remain undefeated in Pac-12 play. The Aztecs found the breakthrough in the 13th minute through Jaxson Hutcheon, who scored his fourth goal of the season after his initial attempt was saved by Gonzaga goalkeeper Chema Preciado. Hutcheon reacted quickly to the rebound and finished to give SDSU an early lead that would ultimately prove to be the difference.
Gonzaga looked to respond throughout the match and created several opportunities, especially toward the end of the first half. However, SDSU’s defensive efforts were key in keeping the Bulldogs off the scoreboard. Nic Diana came up with seven saves, including several important stops late in the match, while the backline stayed organized under pressure and dealt with Gonzaga’s attempts to get the ball into dangerous areas. As the rain intensified in the second half, conditions added another challenge for both sides, making it even more difficult to maintain control of the ball and defend under pressure.
With the rain pouring down, the final minutes became even more intense as Gonzaga pushed forward in search of an equalizer. The Bulldogs finished with 20 shots, seven on target, and six corner kicks, but the Aztecs continued to battle defensively and refused to give up the late goal. Diana’s saves proved crucial as SDSU held on for the clean sheet and secured all three points. The victory moved San Diego State to 3-6-5 overall and 1-0-2 in Pac-12 play. In a match that demanded patience, discipline, and resilience, the Aztecs showed they could withstand the pressure and close out a tight game, even as the weather made the finish that much more challenging.
