ANGEL CITY FC 2-1 KANSAS CITY CURRENT
May 20, 2026 • BMO Stadium
LOS ANGELES — Angel City FC earned a needed 2–1 win over the Kansas City Current on Wednesday night at BMO Stadium, using a big goalkeeping moment from Angelina Anderson and a late winner from Kennedy Fuller to take all three points. The result moved Angel City to 4-4-1 with 13 points, while Kansas City dropped to 5-5-0 with 15 points. The match drew 11,574 fans in Los Angeles.
Angel City started fast and punished Kansas City in the ninth minute. Gisele Thompson won the ball after a Current giveaway, drove into the right side of the box, stayed with the play after pressure from Kayla Sharples, and finished low past Lorena to make it 1–0. It was the type of goal Angel City needed: aggressive, direct, and built off pressure instead of long possession.
Kansas City grew into the game as the first half went on. Croix Bethune started to find space around the top of the box, forcing Anderson into a save in the 28th minute before sending another effort just wide in the 42nd. Right before halftime, Kansas City finally broke through. Lo’eau LaBonta helped start the move, Izzy Rodriguez found Ally Sentnor in the middle, and Sentnor’s shot deflected past Anderson to tie the match 1–1 in the 45th minute.
The match nearly flipped early in the second half. Kansas City came out sharper and created better chances. In the 54th minute, Bethune got on the end of a LaBonta cross near the six-yard box, but Anderson made a huge kick save to keep the score level. Minutes later, Sentnor won a penalty after getting behind the Angel City defense. LaBonta stepped up, but Anderson read it, dove low to her left, and smothered the shot in the 57th minute. That save became the turning point of the match.
Angel City then changed the game through its bench. Kennedy Fuller entered in the 69th minute and scored moments later. Thompson headed the ball into Fuller’s path, and Fuller hit a clean half-volley into the left side of the goal to give Angel City a 2–1 lead. Fuller nearly scored again in the 80th minute, curling a shot off the top left corner of the Kansas City goal.
Kansas City pushed late, but Angel City held on. Elizabeth Ball had one of the final chances in stoppage time, missing from the center of the box in the 90+7th minute after a corner. The final whistle came at 90+10, ending Kansas City’s four-match winning streak against Angel City.
Statistically, the game was close but weird. Kansas City had more possession at 58.8%, while Angel City had only 41.2%. But Angel City created more total shots, finishing with 13 attempts to Kansas City’s 9. Both teams put 4 shots on target, while Kansas City had a slight edge in corners, 6 to 5.
The biggest difference was execution. Kansas City had a chance to take control with the penalty, but Anderson delivered the save. Angel City then took its best second-half moment through Fuller. Gisele Thompson was the attacking engine with a goal and an assist, Anderson made the match-saving plays, and Fuller gave Angel City the finishing quality it needed off the bench.
For Angel City, this was more than just a midweek win. It was their first victory since opening the season 3–0–0, and it came against a Kansas City side sitting above them in the table. Angel City next travels to Houston to face the Dash, while Kansas City returns home to face the Portland Thorns.
