LOS ANGELES — San Diego Wave FC earned a massive rivalry victory over Angel City FC on Saturday night, using second half goals from Dudinha and Van Zanten to secure a dramatic win in one of the season’s most intense NWSL matchups.

The SoCal rivalry delivered once again as Angel City FC and San Diego Wave FC battled in a match filled with intensity, momentum swings, and late drama. For San Diego, the pressure was mounting after three consecutive losses, while Angel City entered the night looking to climb back into playoff contention with two games in hand. There was also history hanging over the matchup, as the Wave had gone eight straight matches without a win against Angel City, adding even more emotion to an already heated rivalry.

From the opening whistle, the match carried a playoff-like atmosphere. Just three minutes in, Van Zanten and Borges collided head-to-head while battling for an aerial ball, forcing an early stoppage and immediately setting the tone for a physical contest. Angel City controlled much of the first half, dominating possession and forcing the Wave to rely on dangerous counterattacks. Despite the pressure from the hosts, San Diego continued to threaten in transition and showed flashes of what was to come. The opening 45 minutes ended scoreless, but the intensity inside the stadium suggested the breakthrough was only a matter of time.

That breakthrough came moments into the second half when Dudinha fired the Wave into the lead, silencing the home crowd and shifting the momentum instantly. Angel City responded quickly, however, as Emily Sams found the equalizer less than 10 minutes later to reignite the match. From there, the game exploded into an end-to-end battle, with both sides relentlessly pushing forward in search of a winner. The decisive moment finally arrived in the 81st minute when Van Zanten delivered what proved to be the match-winning goal, securing a historic victory for San Diego over their SoCal rivals. The numbers reflected the chaos and intensity of the contest, with 21 combined shots, 56% possession for the Wave, and five shots on target in one of the most entertaining matches of the season.

The victory could prove to be a turning point for San Diego as they head home with renewed confidence ahead of a crucial clash against the Washington Spirit. The Wave now sit in second place, although both Washington and the Utah Royals FC still hold games in hand. For Angel City, questions continue to grow as their losing streak stretches further at a critical stage of the season. With a matchup against league leaders Portland Thorns FC looming on May 17, the pressure is quickly beginning to rise.
