LAFC 1-4 HOUSTON DYNAMO FC

LOS ANGELES — Houston Dynamo FC handed LAFC a damaging 4–1 defeat at BMO Stadium, punishing the home side with a clinical attacking display despite LAFC controlling large stretches of the match.
LAFC had more of the ball and produced heavier attacking volume, finishing with 62% possession, 20 shots, 10 corners, and 1.4 expected goals. Houston, however, were far more ruthless. The Dynamo had only 38% possession and 12 shots, but still matched LAFC with six shots on target and converted their chances with far greater efficiency.
The biggest talking point before the match was the absence of Denis Bouanga. Bouanga was not injured. He missed the Houston match due to a yellow card accumulation suspension, marking his first absence of the 2026 MLS season. His absence mattered. LAFC still created chances, but they lacked their usual cutting edge in the final third. Bouanga has been one of LAFC’s main attacking threats this season, with five goals and one assist in 11 league matches, and is expected to be available again for the May 13 match against St. Louis City.
LAFC’s performance was not empty of positives. They moved the ball well, completing 677 passes at a 93.2% passing accuracy, while Houston completed 355 passes at 89%. The home side also generated pressure through wide play, recording 18 crosses compared to Houston’s one. But that control did not translate into enough clear finishing quality.
Houston defended deep when needed and handled LAFC’s pressure with discipline. Their 13 clearances compared to LAFC’s two show how much defending they had to do, but they stayed compact, absorbed pressure, and broke forward with purpose. Their goalkeeper also played a major role, making five saves, while LAFC’s goalkeeper was credited with two.
The match also became physical and tense. Both teams committed 12 fouls, while LAFC received four yellow cards and Houston received three. That edge reflected the frustration of the night for LAFC, who had statistical control but not scoreboard control.
For LAFC, this was a frustrating result because the numbers suggest they were not completely outplayed. They had more possession, more shots, more corners, and a higher xG. But Houston were sharper in both boxes. LAFC missed Bouanga’s directness, finishing threat, and ability to turn pressure into goals.
For Houston, this was an impressive road win. They did not need to dominate the ball to dominate the result. They defended with structure, took their moments, and left BMO Stadium with a statement victory.
