AUSTIN — Austin FC and the San Jose Earthquakes played out an entertaining 1-1 draw Saturday night at Q2 Stadium, with Austin leaving it late to find a dramatic equalizer and rescue a point in front of the home crowd.
San Jose came out quickly and took the lead in the eighth minute when Beau Leroux found the bottom corner with a low shot from outside the box. Austin thought they had an immediate response through Facundo Torres, but the goal was ruled out after a VAR review for handball. The Earthquakes continued to look dangerous, but Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver kept his team in the game with several important saves.
Austin came close to leveling things before halftime when Brandon Vazquez’s header hit the outside of the post, leaving the Verde & Black trailing 1-0 at the break. Austin came out with more urgency in the second half and continued to push forward in search of an equalizer. Chances came and went, including a strong effort from Torres that was saved by San Jose goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
With the clock winding down, it looked like San Jose was going to walk away with all three points. But Austin refused to give up. Deep into stoppage time, Brandon Vazquez started the move before Christian Ramirez found Guilherme Biro inside the box. Biro kept his composure and fired a left-footed shot past Gunn to level the game at 1-1, sending Q2 Stadium into a frenzy.
The late goal capped off a dramatic finish for Austin, who extended its unbeaten run to four MLS matches and earned a hard-fought point at home. For San Jose, it was another frustrating result as the Earthquakes continued their difficult run of form.
