CARSON — Club América and CF Monterrey delivered an exciting Leagues Cup semifinal Wednesday night at Dignity Health Sports Park. After finishing regulation tied 2-2, Monterrey won the penalty shootout 5-4 to advance to the tournament final.

América looked like the stronger team during the first half and created several opportunities through Isaías Violante. However, Monterrey goalkeeper Esteban Andrada made multiple saves to keep the match scoreless heading into halftime.

The action picked up quickly in the second half. Diego Rossi gave Monterrey the lead in the 49th minute with a long-range shot that sailed over Rodolfo Cota. América responded through Ramón Juárez in the 57th minute before Alan Cervantes completed the comeback with a powerful strike from outside the box seven minutes later.

América’s lead did not last long. Lucas Ocampos converted a penalty in the 69th minute to tie the match at 2-2. The teams remained even through the final whistle, forcing the semifinal to be decided from the penalty spot.

Cervantes missed América’s fourth attempt, while Monterrey converted all five of its penalties. Hugo Cuypers scored the final kick to send Rayados to their first Leagues Cup Final. América will now face Club León in the third-place match.
