HOUSTON — Houston Dynamo FC hosted Sporting Kansas City in an MLS regular-season clash at Shell Energy Stadium in Houston, Texas. An excited crowd of 18,565 fans filled the stadium for the evening matchup. However, Houston could not pull off an upset as Sporting KC managed to post a road victory, defeating the host Dynamo 2-0.
Sporting Kansas City scored first in the 27th minute, as André Luiz gave the visitors a 1-0 lead. Minutes before halftime, in the 45 th minute, Calvin Harris scored another goal for Sporting KC, and they had a 2-0 advantage over Houston going into halftime.
The game was highly physical, and there were several controversial decisions that left the fans in Houston disappointed. Dynamo star midfielder and fan-favorite Héctor Herrera received a straight red card early in stoppage time of the first half (45 +3′), which meant that his team would play the second half with 10 men on the pitch. Multiple players also received yellow cards, and it was not only Houston’s defenders who were booked. Justin Reynolds (1‘), Taylor Calheira (45+5’), André Luiz (45+6’), and Stephen Afrifa (68‘) all had their yellow cards shown by the officials in charge. Antônio Carlos (55‘) was booked for Houston.
While it may seem that Dynamo would have an advantage over Sporting KC with an extra man on the field, Houston only managed to keep 53.6% of possession, as compared to 46.4 for the visitors. It did not help that the Dynamo squad had to play more defensively, as they tried to equalize, and limit the attacks launched by Sporting KC. Houston managed to register more shots than their guests (22 to 10) and 5 of them were on target, compared to 4 for Sporting KC.
Furthermore, Houston registered 8 corners to Sporting KC’s 2. However, Sporting KC goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland was equal to the task and kept a clean sheet for his team, helping them post a 2-0 victory over Dynamo.
