LOS ANGELES —LAFC earned a dramatic 1-0 victory over Toluca after Eddie Segura scored a stunning late winner at BMO Stadium. The two sides were locked in a defensive battle for most of the night, with both teams creating opportunities but struggling to find the final touch in front of goal.
LAFC had some of the better chances in the opening half, with Denis Bouanga and David Martínez causing problems for Toluca in transition. Mathieu Choinière also came close to opening the scoring with a strike from distance that hit the woodwork. Toluca created chances of its own through Helinho and Federico Viñas, but LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris and the defense kept the Liga MX side off the scoresheet.
The Black & Gold continued searching for a breakthrough in the second half. Martínez looked dangerous when driving at the Toluca defense, while Bouanga forced goalkeeper Hugo González into action as the match remained scoreless. With Toluca appearing ready to take the game into a penalty shootout, LAFC made one final push forward.
That push paid off in stoppage time. Substitute Jacob Shaffelburg broke down the left side and delivered a dangerous ball into the area. After Toluca failed to fully clear the danger, Eddie Segura stepped forward and placed a well-directed shot beyond González to give LAFC the late 1-0 victory and keep the club moving forward in its Leagues Cup campaign.
