SAN DIEGO — San Diego FC had a night to forget at Snapdragon Stadium, losing 5-0 to the Philadelphia Union. SDFC started the game with some good energy and had a few chances early through Amahl Pellegrino and Onni Valakari, but Andre Blake was able to keep the Union in it. San Diego looked like they could get on the scoresheet first, but Philadelphia slowly started taking control as the first half went on.
The biggest story of the game was definitely 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan. Sullivan opened the scoring right before halftime with an incredible backheel finish to give Philadelphia the lead. He came back in the second half and scored again in the 62nd minute, before assisting on Bruno Damiani’s goal just five minutes later. At only 16 years old, Sullivan completely changed the game and finished the night with two goals and an assist. It was a performance that SDFC will definitely want to forget, but one that showed just how much talent Sullivan has.
After Sullivan’s second goal, things just fell apart for San Diego. Damiani made it 3-0 shortly after, and then an own goal from Aníbal Godoy made it 4-0 late in the game. Malik Jakupovic added another goal in stoppage time to finish the 5-0 loss. It was SDFC’s biggest loss in club history and a really disappointing result, especially at home.
Even with this loss, SDFC is still in the playoff race, but the margin for error is getting smaller. San Diego has put together some really good performances this season, but results like this show how important consistency is going to be down the stretch. With the regular season coming to an end, every point matters, and SDFC now has to put this game behind them and focus on getting back on track if they want to make the playoffs.
